Hey there! Remember me? Probably not, it's been a while. Let me explain.
I decided I wasn't going to post anything else till EVERYONE had posted at least once. Well, I figured that Leigh wasn't ever going to post (No offense, I still love you), but SHE DID! I know right?
Well, I must confess, I was caught off guard, and while I could record and post a video tonight, I'm quite sick. SO, I'm going to go a different route. I promise a video for next Wednesday, and today I'm going to write a little about my Freshman musical at the University of Utah.
This year I was privileged to be in the cast of Jason Robert Brown's Songs for a New World. I've been in a fair share of musicals before, but what made this experience so different for me was that I got my first real solo song.
For those of you familiar with Songs, we split the show up by songs, and double casted the show. I was part of the enormously talented Red Cast. On the nights of the Red Cast, I got to sing I'm not Afraid of Anything, and Stars and the Moon.
When familiarizing myself with the show, before auditions, these were the exact songs I wanted. They happen to be two of my favorite songs in the whole show, and I got them. I especially loved the story of Stars and the Moon. It's a lady telling her "love life" story, how she met two men that promised her happiness and love, passion and memories, stars and the moon. But she passed both of them by to find a rich man.
Well, I'm sure you know, I'm not thirty or forty. I'm not married, and I don't know exactly what it's like to have every material thing I could ever want and know that I'll never be happy. I'm not quite old enough to look back on my life with that much regret. But I can imagine it. I can use experiences in my life where I gave up something that made me truly happy, for something that I thought would be more "correct".
To help me with the process of getting into character, I made a slide show. I stole pictures from all over the internet (including some of the lovely Emily Phil's) and put them into a powerpoint project, one slide for the first two men, then more for the things the rich man promised the woman singing the song. Now, some of the pictures I put in were highly personal to me, and I will admit that I took some out, but it shouldn't hinder the slide show in anyway.
I turned it into a youtube video for your convenience, and here it is.
Enjoy! See you next week. :)
